30 Days of Thanks - Day 30!

Photobucket
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Today I am thankful that I participated in the 30 Days of Thanks! It has really made me look for things to be thankful for through out the day, both the big and small things. Even though I usually can't specifically remember most of them by the end of day, it has given me a new appreciation for most things in my life, especially those I take for granted or don't especially like that much. God is so good and has given us so much that we don't deserve!

Thank you Conny for hosting this all month, it has been fun getting to know you and the others a bit through your daily posts of thankfulness!

30 Days of Thanks - Day 29

Photobucket
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Psalm 100
A psalm. For giving thanks.

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.

3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Today I am thankful for a day of rest!

Tasty Tuesday: Creamy Peppermint Patties

We are approaching my favorite time of year, the weeks before Christmas when I get to make all kinds of cookies and candies to give away (and eat, of course!). I have several recipes which I make every year and they are so good, so I will try to share some with you in the next few weeks. First up are Creamy Peppermint Patties. If you like the York Peppermint Patties, you will love these. They are a little bit of work, but so worth it!

Ingredients
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
9 cups confectioners' sugar
3/4 cup milk chocolate chips
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3 tablespoons shortening

Directions
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and extract until smooth. Gradually add confectioners' sugar, beating well.
Shape into 1-in. balls. Place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Flatten into patties.Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until chilled.
In a microwave, melt chips and shortening; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. Dip patties in melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip off; place on waxed paper until set. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: about 4 dozen.

30 Days of Thanks - Day 23

Photobucket
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Today I am thankful...

1. For how honest Sweetie is. At night she tends to get out of bed and play instead of going to sleep. Me: "Get in bed Sweetie." Her: "I am standing on my bed." Or if she goes into Buddy's room he will call for us and she will come running out crying. Us: "What's wrong Sweetie?" Her: "When I go in Buddy's room, he just calls for you!"

2. That Mr. Lovebug's 6th tooth popped through today!

3. For the great deals on turkeys this week at the grocery store. I stocked up a few in the freezer for later.

4. That Thanksgiving means lots of extra business for the Creamery!

5. Great frugal blogs that do the hard work and find all the great deals for me! A couple of my favorites are Frugal Coupon Living and My Frugal Adventures!

30 Days of Thanks - Day 22

Photobucket
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

We've been reading through the book of Genesis lately and we are in the midst of the story of Jacob. When I think of Jacob, I usually think of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the fathers of Isreal and men who walked and talked with the Lord. I tend to forget that they were ordinary men with flaws like us. As we have been reading about Jacob, I am reminded of how sneaky he was by stealing Esau's birthright and Isaac's blessing, and how he put the sticks in the water to get the stronger sheep and goats from Laban's flocks. Yet God still used him and his decendants to fulfill his plans of a sending us a Savior. I am thankful that God chooses to use us and our sins for his glory. I am also thankful that He still loves us and gives us good things even though we do not deserve them. And I am very thankful that He sent us a Savior to save us from our many, many sins!

2. For the amazing amount of homeschool information and ideas that others post on the internet for me to use!
3. That I finally managed to get the bathrooms scrubbed really thoroughly. That's my least favorite chore so I tend to put it off a little too long sometimes.
4. That our Facebook fan page is gaining so many fans lately. That means more happy customers for Twin Brook Creamery! (Feel free to check it out on the right side of my blog!)

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Today I am thankful that we had a great time away, but now we are all home together again! The kids missed each other and played great together all afternoon and now they are in bed and (mostly) quiet. Hubby and I are relaxing and it is just nice to be home again after being gone! 3 days is a great amount of time to be away; the kids don't get too lonesome for us, we get a small break, and there isn't a mountain of laundry to do as soon as we get home! :)

Fluff Talk Thursday!

This week's Fluff Talk Thurday Topic is sewing your own diapers. Since I have zero experience with this topic and have never owned a decent sewing machine, you should head over to Happily Domestic and see what others have to say it.

Instead, I've decided to review a few of my favorite diapers for you.

First up has been my absolute favorite that I've tried, the BumGenius OS Organic Cotton AIO.
This is the most absorbant diaper I have used. Mr. Lovebug can wear it a good 3 hours without a leak. It is also very trim. I've only had it for about 3 months, so I didn't get to try it on a younger baby. It would probably be bulkier, but I think it still would be very trim compared to most one size diapers. I also really like that the layers seperate so it dries faster than most AIOs. The only down side to these is that they are fairly pricey compared to a lot of other one size diaper, but I think they are still worth it.

My next favorite is a toss up between Bum-Ware AIOs and Grobabys. I love the Bum-Ware because they are really really trim. They are also quite absorbant for being so trim. They come in velcro which doesn't have any back elastic and snaps which does. I usually prefer snaps for durability, but the back elastic on these left such a deep red mark across Mr. L's back that I prefer the velcro on these. It is a much stronger, more durable velcro than on any of my other diapers though and after tons of use, doesn't look one bit worn out. I also love that they come with a brown suedecloth inner which keeps Lovebug dry and also hides any stains that we might get. One down side to these is that they are sized so you have to buy multiple sizes for your baby. Mr. Lovebug outgrew our medium sizes ones a couple months back and I've been fortunate enough to win quite a few giveaways, so (sadly) I have not had a need to purchase the next size up. I really miss not having to stuff diapers though, so I might have to consider selling a few of our pockets to get some larges.I also really like the GroBaby diapers because they use the organic cotton like the BumGenius ones and are really absorbant. They are also quite a bit cheaper since you only have to buy 1 shell for every 2-3 soakers. They are nice to put in the diaper bag because they don't take up near as much room as other cloth diapers do. The soakers also take up less room in the laundry. One downside is that they are bulkier than I like, but I still like to use them around the house when it doesn't matter. And finally, my favorite nighttime diaper is the Blueberry OS Deluxe with an extra hemp insert. These have yet to fail me at night, we have never had a leak and Mr. Lovebug usually sleeps 11-12 hours. They are fairly trim for being a one size and having 2 inserts in, but he only wears them under his sleepers which have plenty of room in them.

I wish I was craftier and could sew my own diaper, but I'm just not. So for those of you who were blessed with the talent to sew, head on over to Happily Domestic to get some great info about it!

Fluff Talk Thursday!

This weeks topic: Stinky Diapers!
Beth over a Happily Domestic has a great post about stinky diapers from guest writer, Sherrie, owner of Itty Bitty Baby Bunz. It has tips about how to prevent and treat stinky diapers, so after you read mine, go check it out!
I haven't had too much of a stink issue with my diapers. Most of my diapers and inserts are made from natural materials that don't generally get stink issues, but I have a few microfiber ones that do occassionally have a smell. To prevent the stink from getting in them, I usually put a Downy ball filled with a little vinegar in the wash with my diapers and that seems to do a great job for me. I don't think my detergent (the Costco Kirkland Signature brand) is on any of the recommended detergent lists, but I have never had a problem with it. I also try to hang them out to dry in the sunshine whenever possible. If my diapers do start to stink, I strip them by washing them in hot water 4-5 times and then they are good to go again!

3. Jeremiah 29:11 and many other verses which remind me that God is in control of the future and I don't have to worry about it.

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his loves endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Recently our pastor finished up a sermon series on the Lord's Prayer and today I was thinking about how thankful I am that God gave us an example of how to pray and what we should pray for, so my thankful list today is based on the Lord's Prayer.

1. I am thankful that God is our loving Father, reigning from heaven.

2. I am thankful for his promise of his coming kingdom when Satan and all evil will be destroyed.

3. I am thankful for that He knows what is best for me and I can ask for His will to be done in my life and not my own.

4. I am thankful for everything he provides for us daily, not too much that we would forget Him, and not too little that we need to take what's not ours.

5. I am thankful that He daily forgives me for my many sins and helps me forgive those who hurt me.

6. I am thankful that He desires to answer our prayers to bring glory to Himself.

Tasty Tuesday! Eggnog Cookies

In honor of eggnog season, I thought I would share a few eggnog recipes this month. That way if you happen to have some very tasty Twin Brook Creamery eggnog just sitting around waiting to be used (although I'm not sure how anyone can keep it around long enough to use for baking instead of drinking!) you will have a few new recipes to try out!

Eggnog cookies

Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
1 cup Twin Brook Creamery eggnog
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
5-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg white, lightly beaten
Colored sugar
Directions
In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggnog, baking soda and nutmeg. Gradually add flour and mix well. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut into desired shapes; place on ungreased baking sheets. Repeat with remaining dough. Brush with egg white; sprinkle with colored sugar.
Bake at 350° for 6-8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.

These are really fun to make with kids and we have also frosted them instead of sprinkled with colored sugar. Enjoy!

30 Days of Thanks - Day 2

Photobucket

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love endures forever. Psalm 118:1

Today I am thankful for...

1. Drive up windows at places like the bank and drug store. Whoever had this brilliant idea must have had a lot of little kids. I am so glad I can run errands with the kids and not have to haul the 3 munchkins in and out at every stop!

2. Eggnog season! I love eggnog and am excited to try out a few new recipes I've found that call for it.

3. Matchbox cars and the hours of entertainment they provide in our house. Buddy and Sweetie can find a million different uses for them or spend hours lining them up and racing them!

4. My Brother-in-law who is having a birthday today. Happy birthday A!

5. Quickbooks. How did anyone manage payroll and bill paying before this wonderful program came about?

Be sure to stop over at Conny's blog to see what everyone else is thankful for today!

Carving Pumpkins!

This weekend the kids did a little pumpkin carving. They had fun pulling out all the insides and getting their hands messy. Mr. Lovebug really wanted to help too, but I convinced him he would rather eat a graham cracker while watching his older siblings.
Hubby went online and found some patterns. Buddy picked a couple of bats and Sweetie picked a moon and stars pattern.

Then we stuck in a candle and lit them up! I think they turned out pretty cute!
