Memorial Day Picnic

We had a nice sunny Memorial Day yesterday. Unfortunately M had to work (too bad cows don't know how to feed and milk themselves), but we managed to get out to Birch Bay for a couple hours for a picnic. The tide was way out, so the kids had a lot of fun finding shells and small crabs. There were a lot of other people there for the day, too. I think it must have been a really good time to dig clams because that is what people were doing all up and down the beach. The worst part about the beach is trying to get all the sand out of your shoes before you go!

Our Garden

I finally got my garden all planted last week. We didn't have quite enough room last year for everything, so we increased the size of it this year. I planted cucumber, zucchini, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, beans, corn, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, radishes, and peppers! Along with our blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and pears, this will make for a VERY busy summer of picking and canning or freezing! It is all worth it though to see a full pantry and freezer in the fall. I love being able to preserve our food for my family. Maybe not so much the actual work of it (weeding, picking, preparing, canning, etc) but being able to provide food that I know where it came from and what did or didn't get put on it is very satisfying! I also love using all that fresh food for my favorite recipes and for trying some new ones! If I find any really good ones I will be sure to share them with you all!

FOOD!

This week I decided to try and give L his first taste of solid food. I picked rice cereal for his first meal and it went pretty well. He wasn't overly hungry so he didn't eat too much, but he didn't spit it all right back out at me. After eagerly eating his first couple bites, he lost interest in eating and just wanted to play with the spoon. After a few more meals, he is starting to get the hang of it and is eating a little more each time. Hopefully he is as good of an eater as his sister and doesn't decide to take after his brother!

Jumping Around

On Monday M decided to take an afternoon off work to spend some family time doing something fun. We decided to go check out the Jump Around Fun Zone. The munchkins had a great time burning off a lot of energy. It is amazing how quickly kids make friends! There was another girl there who attached herself to S and they were together the whole time. There are 4 large air-filled jump toys that each featured a different slide, obstacle course, or something else fun to bounce on. There was also a play area more for toddlers with smaller toys to climb on (not bouncy though). There were a few couches and lots of chairs for the parents to just sit and watch, read, use their free wireless internet, etc. The kids had a lot of fun, but since adults weren't allowed to play on the toys, it didn't really make for that great of a family activity. If I ever need to get the kids out to burn energy on a rainy day though, that would be a great place to take them to again.

After the kids were done, we had a nice dinner out and even swung through Dairy Queen for ice cream on the way home. It was a nice relaxing afternoon.
